Administrative Assistant Diploma Description

The Administrative Assistant Diploma Program gives students the practical skills and knowledge needed for a rewarding career in an office environment. Students will learn key software applications and computer skills, typing, administrative procedures, as well as important interpersonal skills to build their confidence as an effective and skilled administrative team member.

Students will receive extensive training on the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Blending key technical abilities, bookkeeping and human resource skills with important professional talents, graduates leave the program with all of the skills and knowledge required to meet employer demands in an administrative role.

Standard Admission

1. Alberta High School Diploma with English 20-1 and passing grade of 50% or higher, verified by transcript, or non-Alberta equivalent OR 2. General Equivalency Diploma(GED) 3. Successful interview with school admin 4. Canadian Level Benchmark of 6 is required if students' first language is not English; SLE Language Evaluation Test-Accuplacer's ESL Language Use Test.

Mature Admission

1. Must be at least 18 years old. (BC residents must be 19 years of age) 2. Microsoft Outlook

This course presents the MS Outlook application interface, tools, and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of email application, scheduling, calendars, contact lists, creating, forwarding and managing messages. This course relies heavily on hands-on activities that allow you to learn concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.

Microsoft Word

Students will learn key skills within Microsoft Word and how to effectively use the application in a workplace administrative capacity.

Microsoft Excel

Students will learn key skills within Microsoft Excel and how to effectively use the application in a workplace administrative capacity.

Microsoft PowerPoint

This Introduction to PowerPoint training class is designed for students who are interested in learning the fundamentals needed to create and modify basic presentations using Microsoft Office PowerPoint. Students will explore the PowerPoint environment and create a presentation by formatting text on slides to enhance clarity and add graphical objects to a presentation and modify them. Students will also add tables and charts to a presentation in order to present data in a structured form and then finalize a presentation.

Keyboarding

The course aims to improve one of the most important skills in the modern-day communication. This should help the students be more effective and efficient while adding value to their keyboarding skills irrespective to their present skills status.

Office Procedures

Students will learn how to conduct themselves in the office and learn common workplace procedures such as proper email etiquette and telephone manner.

Customer Service

Students learn how to engage with customers in a friendly and professional manner, as well as basic conflict resolution skills.

Business Communication

Designed to enable students to communicate comfortably through writing and speaking, this course will enhance their ability to express and receive information effectively.

Bookkeeping/Financial Accounting

Students learn how to record day-to-day financial transactions including purchases, sales, receipts, and payments for organizations, which is a common administrative task to assist with accounting in many business settings.

Human Resources Management

Students learn the strategic approach to effective management of people in a company or organization so they may assist their business in gaining a competitive advantage.

Interpersonal Communication

Students learn how to conduct themselves in an office setting and maintain professional communication and behaviour.

Document Processing

This course covers how to handle various types of documents in an office setting.

Database Management

This course provides foundations while starting from the basic skills in database management. It introduces the variety of database management strategies and techniques and offers the tools needed in a business setting.

Computer Fundamentals

Students learn the basics of computer, the jargons adopted, the technologies used and the related topics. This course will help anyone ranging from not so familiar to computers to someone who has been using computer to learn, utilize and leverage the benefits of modern-day computing techniques.

Marketing Management

Students are introduced to marketing and learn the various jargons, methods, techniques, and software used in the world of marketing. They will learn how to effectively market for a brand or business, and the types of strategies effective for various business niches and objectives.

Event Management

The students will be exposed to the background, theory and the practises used in present day event management. The course will get them knowledge beyond the book and offer real world learning opportunities and an experience of a lifetime.

Procurement Management

This course will introduce the students to the basics of the world of procurement. It will help the students understand the on going shift from the cost based procurement to value based one. The course will also introduce needed technologies and will create a stage for a career path in this field.

Capstone Career Prep

Students work with a professional career counselor to develop and optimize a professional resume to put forward for employers. Additional support in job searching, interview techniques, and other career transition skills are offered to ensure students have the best possible work prospects.

Emotional Intelligence

The course will share the science of well being and offer the intra and interpersonal skills required for emotional intelligence. Students will learn how the soft skills are the hard reality not only for the work but for the personal life as well.

Practicum

This component requires a student to be placed in business setting for four weeks, where they can have a hands-on experience translating the skills they have learned throughout the course.
