Course Components

Microsoft

Students will receive an overview of the commonly used applications within Microsoft Office. You will explore the fundamentals, core features and functions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. You will also develop your mastery of the different software applications through hands-on, practical exercises and activities that will help you confidently use these programs on a regular basis.

Business English

Students will learn effective workplace communication in this course. You will review grammar and punctuation principles, and proofread a variety of business communication materials. Students will review and correct any errors to content, format, references and numerical text, among others. You will also learn and apply standard proofreading symbols to your work.

Business Writing

Students will write memorandums, e-mail messages, information requests, sales, recommendation, introductory and congratulatory letters, to name a few. You will learn to use the right verbs, nouns and colourful adjectives to achieve an effective communication style. Students will also write concise information in the form of formal and informal reports with the use of data, tables, charts and graphs.

Customer Relations, Interpersonal and Office Skills

Students will learn the necessary skills to assist in office operations in this course. You will participate in lectures, discussions, role plays, case studies and work simulations. Students will also learn about the importance of customer relations to the success of a business, and will examine this concept further through case studies and role-playing. You will delve into relevant theories of human behavior and how they may be applied to improve relationships with customers.

Organizational Behaviour

Students will explore organizational life, the relationships between the individuals who work within and the structures of performance. You will look into several components such as the understanding of power, ethics, leadership and management. Students will be evaluated based on their individual and group performance, and assessed on aspects of human psychology and values.

Introduction to Human Resources

Students will be introduced to the role of the Human Resources (HR) officer and assistant in this course. You will learn of the expectations placed on the HR department and the ethical and legal issues relevant to HR. Students will also study aspects of effective HR management, its strategic role and importance with emphasis on employment law, job design, planning, recruitment and selection. This course also covers employee training, performance management and appraisal.

Staffing, Leadership and Change

Students will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to resolve conflict in the workplace between individuals and groups. You will learn to negotiate, communicate, listen, problem-solve and make decisions accordingly. Students will also delve into a detailed hiring process, learn about managing an excess or shortage of staff, and how to attract and retain quality employees.

Compensation and Benefits

A company’s compensation system can heavily impact its success, but what may be effective for one company may not work for another. When no single compensation system fits all organizations, running a company can become overwhelming and complicated. Students will explore a systematic framework for identifying and designing the compensation system that can best work to a company and its employees' benefits.

Training and Development

Students will gain an understanding of the HR role and the importance of training and development within organizations. You will develop skills to conduct a needs analysis, training program design and performance appraisals. Students will also learn to work within an existing training and development framework to maximize staff training potential.

Labour Relations

Students will delve into several topics in this course, such as union history, managing in a union environment, the HR Code, union relations, collective bargaining and recent developments in labour relations.

Employment Legislation

Students will learn about common legal principles and the statutes that govern the employment relationship. You will explore issues relating to employment law and the employment relationship from the perspective of managers, employees and HR professionals. Students will gain an understanding of basic Canadian legislation: legal system, contracts and torts as they relate to employment law.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Students will be prepared to enter the Canadian workplace in this course as they delve into the organizational obligations around the use, collection and disclosure of personal information. You will receive an overview of the applicable privacy and confidentiality legislation with a focus on how it applies to the HR department.

Practicum

(160hrs)- Real-world experience is a crucial component every graduate needs to easily gain employment after post-secondary. Students will receive HR-related work experience in this course, and will take part in the day-to-day operations of an organization’s HR department.
